The Story of Shobha
Shobha's Journey to Independence
Shobha, who has a locomotor disability, struggled for years after completing her 10th grade, spending three years at home unable to find work. Her life took a turn when she met Equip India staff in her village. Although mobility challenges still make it difficult for her to walk and use public transportation, Equip India provided her with vocational training that renewed her hope.
As the youngest of six siblings, Shobha lost both her parents and now lives with her elder sister, who shares her disability. In 2018, Shobha completed Equip India’s tailoring and embroidery course at their Vocational Training Center. She has since worked from home as an artisan, earning around ₹8,000 per month through Equip India’s handicraft projects.
“Thanks to Equip India for giving me vocational training and helping me become independent, without being a burden on anyone,” Shobha says with gratitude, reflecting on her journey from dependence to independence.
