The Story of Jamalbhi
From Darkness to Light: Jamalbhi's Journey of Transformation
Jamalbhi, a young woman with a disability, has faced unimaginable challenges. As a child, an infection in her leg led to an amputation. Later, in a tragic incident during a family conflict, her stepmother threw an axe, accidentally injuring her other leg, which also had to be amputated. This left Jamalbhi a double amputee, feeling isolated and disconnected from her family and community.
In 1999, during a village disability survey, a team from Equip India discovered Jamalbhi sitting alone in a dark corner of her house, pleading for help. Equip India enrolled her in their Vocational Training (VT) program, where she learned embroidery, received prosthetic limbs, and was trained to walk again. Alongside vocational skills, she gained basic education and counseling, empowering her to create beautiful handicrafts that are sold internationally.
With a new source of income, Jamalbhi’s life transformed. Her family began to accept her, and back in her village, she thrived as the president of a self-help group and a member of the village governance council. She also served as a receptionist at a Primary Health Centre. Jamalbhi’s inspiring journey from isolation to independence stands as a powerful example for others, proving that hope and resilience can lead to incredible transformations.
